Colorful shop in Roseau, the Capital of Dominica

In between our jungle adventures in the Nature Island of Caribbean we explored Roseau, the quaint but vibrant capital of Dominica situated along its coast.

We had a pleasant time walking around its narrow  streets lined with colorful rickety wooden houses, buildings and shops. The vibe was very Caribbean with a hint of architectural touch of its former colonizers (French and British).

Join us on our walk and prepare to be delighted by the burst of colors in this charming port city.

Old Market in Roseau, the capital of DominicaWe started our walk in the Old Market located in a cobbledstone plaza that has been  the heart of Roseau for 300 years. It has been a site of political forums, executions, slave market, etc. Today, it’s a marketplace for local crafts and souvenirs.

Public Market, Roseau, DominicaWe checked out the Public Market located on the waterfront where locals go for fresh produce and catch of the day.

Colorful Shops in Roseau, the capital of DominicaWe then walked around the city aimlessly and enjoyed the colorful sights we saw at every turn as well as the friendliness of locals who would stop us to ask, “Is everything alright?” We guess that’s how they say “hello.”

You know the market place was big and colorful that we didn’t even notice KFC until we were standing in front of it. Fortunately, it was the one and only American chain restaurant in the city. No, there was no deep fryers smell.

Hi Salika, the colors did give a vibe of happy tropical feel. We were really happy to be there.

  5. Gosh – I love the Caribbean! Though I haven’t been to Dominica yet, from your pictures it looks like it has the same kicked back vibe that can be felt throughout other islands I’ve visited. I especially like the picture of the little bakery. My Jamaican husband refers to these roadside restaurants as “cook shops” – quintessential Caribbean eateries.

HI Dana, The cook shops are called “snackettes” here. I thought it was cute name. Yes, the kicked back vibe is definitely very Caribbean.

“Is everything alright?” sounds music to my ears, a great way to potentially break the ice with locals. You even got yourself a friendly girl to show you the way to the garden – which speaks volumes about hospitality among the islanders there!

      Hi Dennis,
I know, it sounds musical isn’t it? The locals were really very warm and friendly. As much as we enjoyed all adventures, our encounters with the locals are what made the trip memorable and meaningful.

  9. Marcia

Love the colors and the walk, Marisol. I like your observation of how large a role music plays in their lives and that reggae music, which was born in Jamaica, is so popular there. My friends and I complain that we don’t hear enough reggae music here — you’d think that’s all you’d hear but there’s such an eclectic mix.
Beautiful pics of girls. Love the uniform.

      Hi Marcia,
You know, if I get shipwrecked in Roseau and I didn’t know what island it was I would think I was in Jamaica. Aside from the reggae music, Bob Marley’s image was everywhere – on the t-shirts people wear on the street, on the backpack they carry, on the posters on the restaurants wall, on the souvenir items, etc. The Jamaican icon is like god here!

    • Traveling Solemates

Hi Freya, the colors seem to pull people to explore the city. The garden was definitely beautiful. We liked that it had a hiking trail that lead to the highest point in the city.
