We continue to reminisce our first wedding anniversary trip in Australia as we celebrate and prepare to leave for our 5th anniversary trip.  Melbourne was our next stop after our delightful time in beautiful Sydney. We may have fallen in love with Sydney but we felt more connected with Melbourne. Much more intimate with distinctive creative energy, we found Melbourne more soulful.

02-Melbourne, Australia

We admired Melbourne’s traditional architectures standing side by side with modern, edgy structures.

Melbourne, AustraliaWe found Melbourne’s Victorian architectures impressive. It’s considered one of the most beautiful Victorian cities after all.  Flinders Street Station, a commuter railway hub, exemplifies Melbourne’s Victorian connection.

Federal Square. Melbourne, AustraliaHowever,  it was Melbourne’s modernist design, like the edgy structures in Federal Square,  that left greater impression on us.

Federal Square. Melbourne, AustraliaWe admired the exhibits at Ian Potter National Gallery but we were also in awe of the building design itself and the view of the neighboring modernist building from inside.

Skyline, Melbourne, Australia

The modest but spectacular Melbourne skyline.

Serious rowing practice on a chilly late afternoon on Yarra River.

The sports stadium and a theme park along Yarra River.  Melbournians seem to mix their creativeness with serious sportiness and sense of fun.

The trams made moving around the city easy and convenient. A lot of locals though seem to prefer the bike to get from point A to Z.

Melbourne, Australia

With stylish locals mostly in dark outfits, this scene feels like Manhattan.  We don’t know if it was just us, but we found all the locals good looking.  We wonder if its the water they drink.

Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne, Australia

As we love marketplaces, we went to check out Queen Victoria Market; we heard Melbournians love to shop here. With lots of organic products, it’s our kind of market, too.

Wine Stall, Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne, Australia

Yay! There were a lot of stalls selling vast variety of local wines.

Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne, Australia

Our particular favorite was this wine stall where shoppers can go for wine refills. How civilized!

“Can I have a kilo of crocodile, 2 kilos of emu and 3 kilos of kangaroo sausage?”

This stall was a fun novelty for us.

Cumulus Restaurant, Melbourne, Australia

We thoroughly relished Melbourne’s sophisticated and creative culinary culture.

Hardware Lane, Melbourne, Australia

We took pleasure in exploring the city’s charming network of  laneways.

Hardware Lane, Melbourne, Australia

We particularly enjoyed hanging out in Hardware Lane.  Lined with bar and restaurants and street entertainments, it is a lively place to be.

Grafitti Walls, Hosier Lane, Melbourne, Australia

For us nothing displays Melbourne’s creative exuberance better than Hosier Lane. It is lined with colorful restaurants and amazing graffiti walls.

  10. I would not have guessed about Melbourne having so much going on with art, architecture, food and culture. And so many good-looking locals! Those are far different meats than I’m used to seeing at the market — don’t know how many of those options I would actually try. Maybe I should just go to the wine stall.
